Privacy
Rungs is an iPhone app for exceptional people under twenty-five. This policy explains what we collect when you apply to or use Rungs, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. "Rungs", "we" and "us" mean Rungs, the operator of the app and joinrungs.com.
IWhat we collect
What you give us.
- Phone number. You sign in with your mobile number and a one-time code we send by text. We don't use email or passwords.
- Your application. Your name, birthday, city, college or university, a one-line headline, your answers to the application questions, any links you add, and your portrait.
- Your profile. What you choose to show other members once admitted, including photos and anything you edit later.
- Referrals. If you refer someone, the phone number you enter for them. We use it only to recognise them if they apply and to link their application to you.
- Messages. What you write to members you match with.
- Reports and support. Reports you make about other members, and anything you send to help@joinrungs.com.
What we collect as you use Rungs.
- Activity. Who you connect with or pass on, your matches, blocks, and when you were last active.
- Device and technical data. A push notification token if you allow notifications, your app version, device model and operating system, and basic logs (such as IP address and error reports) that keep the service secure and working.
- Photos and camera. If you allow it, the app opens your photo library or camera so you can choose a portrait. We only receive the photo you pick.
We don't collect your contacts, your precise location, or advertising identifiers, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
IIHow we use it
- To create your account and sign you in.
- To consider your application and let you know when its status changes.
- To run Rungs for members: show you people you should know, create matches, deliver messages and send notifications.
- To credit referrals, by matching a referred number when that person applies.
- To keep Rungs safe: verify age, review reports, enforce our Terms, and prevent fraud and abuse.
- To fix problems, understand how the app is used in aggregate, and improve it.
- To meet legal obligations.
Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on our contract with you (to provide the service), our legitimate interests (safety, security and improving Rungs), your consent (notifications, photo access), and legal obligations.
IIIWhat other members see
Once you're admitted, other members can see your profile: your name, age, city, school, headline, photos, links and the answers you choose to show. Your phone number and birthday are never shown to other members; only your age is. Messages are visible only to you and the member you're talking to. Your application, including answers you don't put on your profile, is not shown to members.
IVWho we share it with
We don't sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising. We share it only with:
- Service providers who run parts of Rungs for us under contract: Supabase (database, sign-in and file storage, hosted in the United States), our text-message provider Twilio for sign-in codes, Apple and Expo for push notifications and app updates, and GitHub for this website.
- Other members, as described above.
- Authorities or others when we believe in good faith that the law requires it, or to protect the safety of a person or the rights of Rungs and its members.
- A successor if Rungs is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy continues to apply to your information.
VHow long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, photos, application, matches and messages from our live systems right away. Backups roll off within 30 days. We may keep a minimal record longer where we need it for safety or the law, such as a report made about an account or the fact that an account was removed for breaking our Terms.
Applications are kept while they're pending, until you delete your account.
VIYour choices and rights
- Edit your profile at any time in the app.
- Delete your account in the app under You. This is permanent.
- Turn off notifications or photo access in iPhone Settings.
- Block or report any member from their profile or your conversation.
- Access, correct, or get a copy of your information, or object to how we use it, by writing to help@joinrungs.com. Depending on where you live (for example California, the UK or the EU), you may have further rights, including the right to complain to a data protection authority. We won't treat you differently for using them.
VIISecurity
Your information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited by account-level rules in our database so that members can only read what they're meant to. No system is perfectly secure, so please tell us at once if you think your account has been compromised.
VIIIAge
Rungs is for people aged 18 to 24. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we delete it.
IXInternational transfers
Rungs is operated from, and your information is stored in, the United States. If you use Rungs from elsewhere, your information is transferred to the United States, where we protect it as this policy describes.
XChanges
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
